Emilie Conrad is a somatics pioneer, and is the founder of Continuum. Her love for movement led her to discover the essential, primary movements common to all life forms that lie beneath our cultural influence. "These fundamental movements are a "cosmology" of life, where form is fluidly mutable, dissolving and shaping itself anew."
I'll encourage you to check out a workshop as it was only after watching Emilie "perform" that I really "got" what she was teaching. The experience of doing Continuum movement gives me an immediate sense of the the "Breath of Life" moving through myself. It's a bit like combining tai chi, biodynamic work, and ecstatic dance..... but different.
Continuum has inspired progress in my own movement practice with
Poi and it has broadened my understanding of the movement I see, or sometimes more importantly don't see in my clients.
From Emilie...
Continuum is a process by which we can experience the interconnection of our own origins with the larger currents of all organismic life, beginning with the first cell and ultimately layered into the intricacies of human form.
All living processes owe their lineage to the movement of water.
The fluid presence in our bodies is our fundamental environment; we are the moving water brought to land.
Rather than following a fixed system of postures or formalized exercises that maintain patterned structure, Continuum explorations delve into the play of emerging and dissolving of form. Continuum’s elegant sound and movement practices make an art form of dissolving constraint, welcoming the liberation of the entire person at every level.
